Six European qualifying matches today

Of this week’s six European qualifying matches for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, it is the fixture between Latvia and Russia that stands out.

Elsewhere in Group 3, Slovakia will be looking for maximum points when they face Liechtenstein in Vaduz, where the Portuguese were previously held to a famous 2-2 draw.

In Group 4, the Faroe Islands meet Cyprus in a mini-competition to avoid last place, with both teams on a single point as things stand.

The situation is similar in Group 2 as well, where bottom-placed Kazakhstan host Georgia. Neither side have registered a point so far.

The two matches in Group 1 will have no influence on the top two places, which occupied by the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Romania prepares to take on bottom side Andorra. In the other game, FYR Macedonia meet Finland in Skopje in the battle for fourth spot in the group.
