USA and Mexico get the job done in style

Although the USA and Mexico always start as favourites to take two of the CONCACAF berths at any FIFA World Cup™ finals, the manner in which the regional powerhouses got the job done this time around was noteworthy. Both Bruce Arena’s and Ricardo Lavolpe’s sides were ruthlessly effective in the ‘Hexagonal’ final phase, where six wins, one draw and one defeat apiece had them home and dry with time and games to spare.

In the space of four days last week, the qualification scenario in the North, Central American and Caribbean Zone became significantly clearer. And although the Stars and Stripes actually found themselves in second place in the six-team group following matchday eight, they were unquestionably the biggest winners of September’s fixtures. Showing themselves to be more resolute and solid than ever, Bruce Arena’s men posted a warning to all their potential rivals ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup.
