England squad welcomes back Campbell and Smith

England manager Sven-Goran ErikssonEngland face Austria at Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday before playing Group 6 leader Poland following Wednesday.

England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson recalled back defender Campbell and Smith in a midfield role, although his usual position is as a striker.

Newcastle striker Michael Owen will join up with the England squad on Tuesday. The 25 year old missed his club’s 0-0 Premiership draw at Portsmouth on Saturday after suffering a dead leg in a training ground collision.

Because Rooney must sit out England’s next World Cup qualifying group tie, after picking up his second booking of the campaign in Northern Ireland, Liverpool forward Peter Crouch is in pole position to partner Michael Owen against Austria.

England squad:

Paul Robinson, Chris Kirkland, Robert Green;

Ashley Cole, Phil Neville, Luke Young, Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Sol Campbell, Ledley King;

Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, David Beckham, Alan Smith, Kieran Richardson, Jermaine Jenas;

Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Darren Bent, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe.
