2007 Copa America Preview: Argentina vs. Brazil
Brazil have historically been considered the best footballing nation in the world, with a seemingly endless supply of world class players every generation, they have the mindset, almost divine right to the World Cup. Every tournament has the Brazillians pretty much the favorites. This speaks for itself.
But lately, there seems to be something about the way the current Brazillians play. It has been in effect since the 2006 World Cup. Just play the top stars (Kaka, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo) and load the team with the regular supporting cast and hope for the best. While individually still a joy to watch, there is another team that has overtaken the Brazillians by playing swashbuckling, passing and creative TEAM football.
The passing and movement of the Argentinians so far has been phenomenal. Players working and moving as a team as opposed to the Brazilians, whose game plan seems to consist only of defensive ball retention while they wait for one of their impact players to create some magic.
While it is fair to say the Brazillians are fielding a “weakened” squad, just look at last year’s World Cup for confirmation that the rot has set in a while ago. Even a change in coach has not seen a change in overall tactics. While Brazil’s much heralded all-stars (Kaka, Ronaldo, Adriano and Ronaldinho, playing the ridiculous attacking rectangle) struggled through the World Cup, Argentina was producing the best football during the tournament.
In defence, Argentina possesses their typical hard as nails toughness, which stops opposing teams from having any opportunity to bully them off the pitch. Once they’ve matched their opponents mentally and physically, their sublime talents on the ball and outstanding teamwork will start to show and win them the game.
With players like Messi and Tevez set to provide the magic for years to come, Argentina’s wait for the World Cup will surely be coming to an end soon. Let’s hope they get their hands on the 2007 Copa America!
